4 Years Old

Seems longer than 4 years, but I recently found a post in my April '03 archives that states the day I began using blog software. I began the 'blog' part of my Web presence on April 29, 2003. My Web archives go way back, to 1993/94. One day when I have the time I'll have to slap 'em all up here, just for giggles.

Friday Feathers

The Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) is an iridescent green bird with a black throat patch that reflects bright ruby red in the sun. No other bird is as tiny, its size a mere 3-3 1/2 inches (7.5-9 cm).

image

Can hover, fly up and down, and is the only bird to fly backward. Does not sing, but will chatter or buzz to communicate. The wings create a humming noise, flapping 50-60 times each second or faster during chasing flights. Its heart pumps 1,260 beats per minute, and it breathes 250 times per minute. Attracted to tubular red flowers.

Dimply, Saggy, Droopy

... It is at these times of the year that I realise that I really ought to go on that diet that I said I'd go on at midnight, 31st December last year. You know, just to sort out my dimply thighs, saggy arse, droopy boobs and get rid of at least one of my waists...

Friday Feathers

The American Robin can be heard singing all night long in the springtime. The male is a familiar gray bird with a rusty red breast, nearly black head and tail. It has a white chin with black streaks and a white eye-ring. The female is similar but with a gray head and duller breast.

Their eyes are placed far back on the sides of its head. This particular bird is often seen fighting its own reflection in windows.

This and That

Spent last week dusting my brain of extraneous fodder and enjoyed some temporarily mild Northeast temperatures. The nice weather afforded me the opportunity to spend a lot of time outdoors photographing my favorite subjects. :-)

When I returned home, there was a lovely birthday surprise waiting for me from Steve and Elena -- two boxes of outrageously delicious treats from Grendel Sweets, which I raved about last month. Thanks so much, Steve and Elena!

Needless to say, Miss Piggy had a field day and refused to share the goodies with anyone. After all, it IS all about me when it comes to my birthday!

ION (in other news), as soon as I can get around to it, I'm planning to do a separate blog for Friday Feathers. Though I'll most likely continue posting bird bits here on Fridays, the other blog will give me the opportunity to post more frequently on the subject of birds and post more of the photos I've taken. Unless there are better recommendations, I'm going to use Blogger for it, even though it's got that godawful Blogger bar at the top of the page (hey, I have no problem with it if only I could move it elsewhere on the page.) If you've used or are currently using Blogger for your blog do let me know; perhaps you'll let me 'borrow' your templates if you've customized the page layout/design. :-)

Other than the above, same 'ol, same 'ol. P.S. Thanks for all your BD wishes, were they via comments, email or voice mail. I truly appreciated each one!
