ION (In other news...)

News from around my blogroll...

Paul of It's Not Within Me to be Silent shares the sudden and recent loss of his dad. There are no words that can make him feel less pain than he does, but the caring and support of friends near and far can be of comfort.

Note to Al @ Fulton Chain:

"More than once I found myself on my knees.
On my knees, with tears streaming from my eyes,
on my knees unable to fall down and unable to get up,
on my knees where I stayed until someone came along
to hoist me back to my feet." - Fear

"Shit, that was dumb idea. What was I thinking?" You're a big boy, you know what you need to do. xxxxoooo :-)

Ted @ Rocket Jones wants to go to Stripperaoke in Portland. Of course he got that idea from me. :-)

The one and only female voted Best European blogger the divine Ms. Zoe of MBIAT was royally screwed over by a BBC journalist last week. Evidently Zoe's blog is now suddenly too randy for them. Go figure.

Kat of Kat's Stuff has been MIBA (missing in blog action) since moving to Virginia. She's due a phone call from me so I can check up on her. (/makes mental note to phone later.)

Piggy and Tazzy are suffering serious broadband withdrawal. (Posted under Madness by Tazzy.) I feel your broadband pain, as I went through my own bout of it last week.

Tom: "Still Not Afraid"

Tom is one of many U.K. blog authors I manage to read on a regular basis. Last year around this time Tom was in the midst of training, or was about to compete in the Tough Guy Challenge. Those of us who read Tom's blog are not only interested in his athletic pursuits and movie reviews but also his thoughts about the recent terrorist attacks. (Be sure to read his blog post titled, 600 Seconds.)

With his permission, I give you his latest post (and yes, that's Tom in the photo.) Thanks Tom!

It's "Ode to Ted" Day

I love Ted @ Rocket Jones. Yes I do. I can write that because I truly believe you can love another human being without it being mistaken for something of an intimate nature. I love Ted because:

... he's a huge ice hockey fan
... he asked me to be on the Rocket Jones cheerleading squad
... he's the type of husband every female would want to have. He is utterly and completely in love and devoted to his wife, and when he writes about her, his love for her is truly evident and shines through.
... he can whip up a delectably delicious cinnamon loaf and mail it to me so I can become porky pig

It's really a shame we can't clone him. A Ted in every household. A Ted who's a terrific dad and husband and a dear friend. A Ted who treats strangers like family. When it comes to Ted, you know instinctively that if you ran into him on the street or met up with him in a pub that he'd have a huge, warm and welcoming smile on his face. That's what I sense even though we've never met face-to-face. Yup. Today is "Ode to Ted" day.

Today I profess all of this mushyness and admiration because he managed to surprise me yet again. Here's why. [Ted: yes, the show is indeed juvenile at times, but hey, sometimes it's way too much work to be an adult, and I'm really happy that we made you laugh. This is only the beginning of my shoutouts to you.] :-)

Thank you Ted. I can't express properly how much I appreciated what you wrote this morning. You're the best.

Are You a Digital Citizen? (redux)

If you're reading this then there's a damn good chance you're a digital citizen, otherwise you're just a huge fan of moi and can't get enough of my witticisms, charm, grace, and of course, my blazingly gorgeous blue eyes. [Excuse #1: that commentary can be blamed on the heat wave here.] Now that the commercial endorsement of myself has concluded, carry on reading please.

As I mentioned just recently in a previous post, the BBC News' Have Your Say inquires: Are You a Digital Citizen? If so, visitors to the site can deposit their two cents and wax on -- or off -- about blogs, podcasts, digital music, digital photography, digital creativity AND film making. Hmm... I think I commented on 4 out of 6, gently wrapped my two cents in pale yellow tissue paper, tucked it carefully into the comments box and before I sent it off, carefully and lovingly tied it with a pale blue ribbon. [Excuse #2: see Excuse #1 and add: I'm sun struck.]

Bored

As is evidenced by the change in graphic and colors, I became weary of the look of the blog. I tried way too many times to turn it back to a 3-column blog -- which I had a while ago -- but no matter what I did I couldn't get it to work properly. Maybe I should have another contest (haven't done one of those in quite a while either) only this time it would be design my blog using 3 columns - column/blog body/column - and the best design (along with new header graphic, of course) wins... oh, something. Is this a good idea or am I just burning mental rubber here? Anyhoo, that's my two cents' worth for this a.m.

P.S. I forgot to mention that I have to be able to use the layout/design (index and stylesheet) in Movable Type.

BBC's Digital Citizens: Have Your Say

The Divine Ms. Zoe of MBIAT, aka Best European Blog 2005, recently posted a missive she received from the BBC. As follows:

"I wanted to let you know that my series on Digital Citizens starts next Monday 18 July on the BBC News website. The section about blogs - and your blog! - will be run on Thursday 21 July.

I wanted also to let you know that as part of the series we want to hear from ordinary people who are being creative in the digital age, we want to hear their stories, opinions and learn about their blogs!

I was wondering if you’d be willing to let your readers know what we’re up to and encouraging them to participate next week. I’m very excited about digital creativity and the more people getting in touch with us the better.

We’ll be running a Have Your Say from Monday 18 July. The page requesting people’s views etc. will appear on this section http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/talking_point/default.stm

I'll send you the link to the specific page when it goes live on Monday.

If you wanted to post Sunday or Monday about this Have Your Say - pretty please - then I'd be really grateful. "

Cell Phoneitis

Am I the only person who finds that folks in the U.S. are a bit too overly attached to their cell phones? Years ago while travelling in Europe, the "handy" (as it is referred to in Germany) was fairly new, and though a number of Europeans had mobiles, it wasn't as if the thing had been surgically attached to their bodies. There were mobile phones in the U.S. back then, but the phones themselves were more of a chunky clunky unit. You wouldn't find folks slipping that thing into a pocket, nor did you see almost everyone carrying one.

Convenient, yes -- but along with the ability to speed dial anyone/anywhere, enter rudeness and indifference. Do we really need to hear you yapping into your phone all day and all night, at work, at the store, in the subway, on the train, in the bathroom, on a date? I know where the off key is on my cell, and I use it.

My point here is that I think that cell phone use in the U.S. is totally out of hand. What did people do BEFORE they had cell phones? Yes, they're terrific for emergencies and business and all that, but is it really necessary to yip-yap on that damned thing while food shopping? Must you keep the phone on at all times, letting people know how important you are when it rings in the middle of a performance at the theatre? How about setting the unit to vibrate? If it's really necessary to keep it on at all times -- you're a doctor or anyone else whose job requires them being on call -- the vibrate option was created for those moments when you don't want to disturb anyone else.

Perhaps I'm just getting old and cranky. Then again, maybe not.

Tropically Depressed Cindy...

Update #2:
A friend just sent this to me. Too funny. Thanks, you know who you are. :-)

Update #1: See, I told ya. Tropical Depression CINDY Forecast/Advisory

"Our main concern with Cindy is that she'll come along the coastline, like it here, and stay awhile. We like tourism, we know people enjoy it here, but in Cindy's case, we hope she just keeps on going.''

Pfft. I'm not so interested in the South. ;-)

------------

July 5

... yes it's true, I've worked myself into a frothy lather and am blasting my way through the Gulf of Mexico. Watch out, I'm a comin'!!! (Chances are the tropical storm will grow tired and bored and fizzle out, as always.)

26 Things

I recently completed the April 26 Things Photographic Scavenger Hunt. When I visited the site to submit the URL for my completed hunt (housed, of course, over on my photo gallery,) I noticed there's a new list for July. Thankfully it's not due until August. Here I go again!

Fourth of July, and Then I Fell into a Pothole...

flag image

This time, last year... (waves to Oz)
July 04, 2004

My Fourth of July was moving along splendidly. The express train zipped me downtown and I had a lovely lunch with my Australian friend who was visiting NYC for the first time (gee, can you guess who it is?) After lunch at the South Street Seaport, we ventured uptown via subway (after the absentminded one figured out which direction to head) to the Apple Store, a must-visit for my fellow Apple fanatic. A trip to Soho would not be complete without an iced mochachino @ Space Untitled on Greene Street, along with a look at the developer release of Tiger, Apple's newest operating system.

Afterwards as we walked up Greene Street, I made sure I lived up to my reputation for being clumsy by falling into a pothole in the street, leaving my visitor temporarily stunned since I fell into him. I pulled myself up and limped away, embarrassed by my own display of acrobatics. Now that I'm home and the ankle is swollen, I'm no longer finely tuned for prime-time city speed walking. I think this means my plan for viewing the fireworks show up close and personal will now be limited to television. #@$%&!!!!
