$600 Jeans
"It's going to come down to how your behind looks when you pour yourself into them. No matter how good the wash or the detail or the label, if it doesn't look good on a behind, it won't sell." - New York Times
I don't know about you, but I can think of other things I'd spend $600 on. My own Gap-attired, droopy butt pocketed jeans be damned. (Hmm. That didn't come out quite the way I wanted it to... oh well, who cares!) There's no way in hell I'd spend that kind of money on jeans, I don't care how good they look on one's bum. I'd opt instead for things like plane tickets, hardware, software, 6-month gym membership, Christmas club, or simply not spend it and leave it in the bank. :-) What about you? Would you buy $600 jeans? If not, what would you spend the money on?

Still Tumbling
I could have used "Oops, I did it again" or "I'll tumble 4U" or some other dorky title for this post, but since my brains have received a bit of a rattling, I'll just leave it as is, still tumbling. :-)
I'm convinced that in a previous life I was stuntwoman or something along those lines. In true "me" form, I walked out of my apartment, turned the corner to descend the main staircase and the next thing I knew I was on my back and bouncing off the stairs . Those of you who have been reading my blog for a while may recall the tale I wrote back in June of 2003 -- June 8 actually -- when I did that very same thing but in my mother's house, my foot slamming into a glass picture frame that was at the bottom of the stairs.
All is fine, though some areas of my body are still in recovery. When I realized what happened I laughed, but that didn't occur until all the obscenities left my mouth. You'd think I was just learning to walk with new feet or something, the way I plummeted down the stairs. Oh well. Sometimes you've got no other choice but to laugh at yourself.

Desire
To my fellow photography nuts:
Okay everybody, it's time to lean back in your chair, look at the pretty gadgetry
and join me in a collective drool.
Thanks for the heads up, Al!

Bloomerific
I spent the past few days out of the city -- no laptop, just the digital camera and yours truly. The weather was spectacular and I had a number of outdoor chores to keep me busy while visiting my mom. I haven't been to my mom's house in quite a while, and this is probably the only luxury of being self-employed -- being able to depart at a moment's notice. It's difficult for me to remain parked when the weather is good, and anything that keeps me outdoors is just ducky. When I finished tilling the soil, planting and painting, driving my mom around town and doing whatever else needed to be done, I finally took the camera out.
Mom's yard offered up some new and different flowers, some I'd never seen growing before. Evidently she planted but couldn't recall what type of flowers or when she did it. Other than the impatiens I planted, she had tulip buds about to pop, a japanese maple tree in partial bloom, and I think there were some daffodils also. (I'm not exactly the green thumb and still can't tell the difference between a petunia and a pansy.) When I got to the flowers in the photo below, I thought they were lilacs, then found out that they're hyacinth.
And there ya have it. A few days of sunshine and dirt under my fingernails and some gorgeous flowers. Just a bit of sunshine is all it takes to light a fire under my butt and get me outside with the camera. :-) Additional flower photos from this excursion will be added to the photo gallery as soon as I can get to it.

Well, that was fun.
Things have been quiet around here, thanks in part to the tax filing deadline and another appointment at the dentist (this time it involved stitches.) As mentioned previously, I'm determined to get it all done and thankfully have been spared any sort of mouth pain (yay for me.)
ION (in other news), the weather forecast for the next few days is summer temperatures. Go Spring!

Yahoo! 360° Beta
The day I received my first invite to join Yahoo! 360° Beta I hesitated. My immediate thought was oh god no, not another Friendster-like place. Since the origin of the invite was from someone who doesn't usually opt in on these types of things, I decided to check it out.
There are a number of options available in this latest social networking widget. You can create your own blog, (which is a good thing if you're not currently maintaining one and want a simple way to do it - along with a comments area and RSS feed [tk],) share music, post lists, reviews and photos, and write a profile of yourself, if you want. You can decide if you want the world to see it, or limit your blog, etc. to only friends and friends of friends. In other words, you're in complete control of what is seen and what is not.
Then there is the friends area, where you can invite/see/browse -- your own friends, other friends, and friends of friends. I was curious about one person's friends list and went to their blog, read a bit, then experienced that 5 degrees of separation thing. In reading some of the names on this person's list, I came across Dwight Silverman of the Houston Chronicle (he writes the Chronicle's technology column.) I've known Dwight since, oh, 1995 or '96. He wrote a kick-ass review of my web site (circa '96, back when I was a famous and world-renowned web goddess) and we had a beer or two in New York's Bryant Park way back when. Though we're both bad about staying in touch more often with each other, Dwight is in my top 10 cool and favorite people list. And suddenly there he was, just a few bodies away from me in Yahooyland . I immediately sent him a virtual poke, and...
... I digress.
So... I accepted the invite. I quickly set everything up to my liking, and found that even though I didn't want to begin blog #4 (this blog, the photo gallery, and the podcast blog are more than enough for me to maintain already,) I couldn't prevent myself from posting one or two entries. Each time I see the word photos on my page I have this urge to post photos, then think, "DUH!" I've already done that, just not on Yahoo!
Later on I invited some of you to join me in this latest widget wackiness. Of the 10 or so invites I sent out, only one person declined, stating that they hated Yahoo! (funny, I had the same opinion until I checked it all out,) and other invites are still pending response, sent mainly to folks I know who don't have blogs of their own. A few others accepted the invite but not unlike my initial reaction, decided not to go full-tilt boogie on yet another blog. I'm really undecided about this Friendster and Gmail on steroids widget; but it's worth a try if you're into it.

Have. Hold. Hay
I've always joked about Prince Charles with my friend Kevin at the BBC/UK. Kev felt sorry for Charles while I'd be busy making wise cracks about him. Now that Chuck has married again, it's possible that my joking will now end. We'll see, but in the meantime...
... I must provide my commentary on the royal nuptials. Chuck looked like a happy man, finally morphing himself into what he always wanted to be -- a tampon. Camilla, resplendently attired after a wardrobe change, was radiant -- save for the sea grass/horse hay that seemed to grow out of her head. Her Farrah Fawcett-like hair flip would have faired better were it not accompanied by that ghastly headpiece. Her grass crown, by the way, almost had the good fortune of blowing right off her head. Unfortunately, Camilla herself held the thing down against the blowing British winds. Ah well. Who says the British don't have a sense of humor.
Joking aside, Chuck and Camilla's union serves as proof that true love endures. Good for them that they finally tied the knot.

The disco gods must have sent you
Woke up to this disco tune playing on the radio, and now it's playing on my iPod - volume at maximum level. :-)
Heaven Must Have Sent You - Bonnie Pointer
Wanna thank you for the joy you've brought me
Thank you for the things you taught me
Thank you for holding me close
When I needed you the most
Now I don't know much about you baby
But I know I can't live without you
Heaven must have sent you honey
To love only me
So... who's gonna dance with me? :-)

Take the last train to...
Updated April 11:
Train photos are now up here.
A few weeks ago I travelled to Pennsylvania to dust my brain (why else would I go?) Seems that each time I head out to PA, I find yet another new place just oozing with photo opportunities. This latest trip had me in Scranton, where I tripped upon the the Steamtown National Historic Site, the only national park dedicated to the history of steam locomotion.
This historical site visit wasn't planned; the street signs leading to it simply came into view while driving. Why not, I thought to myself. The first thing you see upon entering this park is this amazing display - all these old locomotives just sitting there on rusted railroad tracks. With the car parked and camera in hand, I set off to explore all of them. ((Photos tk over in my photo gallery.)
Of course I had to board these old relics and further my exploration. Yes, I had to have my picture taken -- not once, but many times, just because the first one is always guaranteed to be a dorker and truth be told, I'm a ham. After hanging on and off one of the locos (have you made the connection yet?) and posing much longer than I had energy for (take the DAMN picture, will you?!?) only one of the photos ended up a keeper (see below.)
The J Crew men's oversized sweater gave me linebacker proportions, the angle of the photo cuts my height and the length of my legs, and hey, don't ya just love the shoulder bag. About the only thing that works well here are my hiking boots and my Gucci prescription sunglasses. You can never accuse me of being vain, that's for sure. ;-) Now you certainly didn't think this post was going to be about trains, did you?

Podcasting survey says...
Audio programs known as "podcasts" are catching on with people who own iPods or other digital-music players. Podcasters create radio-like programs of commentary, music or humor, which are saved in MP3 audio format and posted online. - Reuters
From the survey results:
- 29 percent of U.S. adults who own MP3 players say they have downloaded podcast programs from the Internet
- this means that more than 6 million people are listening to a form of communication that emerged only last year - Nearly half of digital-music player owners younger than 29 years old have tried out podcasts, compared with 20 percent of those 29 or older
- There were no differences between men and women, or broadband and dial-up users

China's Giant Pandas Get Broadband
After reading that headline from Reuters, (and maybe it's just my warped sense of humor in overdrive here,) am I the only person who has imagery of a group of pandas sitting around using laptops or desktops? :-)
China's biggest nature reserve in the foggy mountains of southwest Sichuan province is now wired for broadband. Some might argue that the Wolong Giant Panda Nature Reserve, China's largest, is now ready for the world's first panda internet cafe, but the great digital leap forward is aimed more at panda protection.
Researchers are able to process real-time data on the pandas, including photos and video signals, around the clock at any
given corner of the nature reserve, or observe giant panda cubs on a daily basis without having to step out of their offices."

Other than my right eyeball...
...which feels somewhat funky/fuzzy/freaky, everything else on the right side of my face seems to be back to normal. Yes, this means I no longer resemble Alvin of the chipmunks. Yay for me. (wink)

It's ALL ABOUT Kat Day!!!
Happy Birthday, Kat!
Yes my devoted 3 readers, it's ALL ABOUT Kat Day. It's the day when my friends should be sending bouquets of roses to her mother for not having a headache that night! Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it is that one day of the year when I attempt to payback all that traffic I received on March 30. Those who know me and love me and want to suck up to me should run right on over to her blog and wish her a Happy Birthday. Please do this, because if you don't I'm going to look pretty bad. And besides, it's only for ONE day. C'mon, cough up some help. Feel sorry for me because the dentist sliced yesterday and now I look like this:
