Thanks, Everyone!
Many, many thanks to all of you who took the time to stop by and wish me a HB. Now that it's over, I have since morphed into a much kinder and gentler person who, judging by the swelling on the right side of my face, must now humbly crawl into the dentist's chair today. It is obvious that I have some sort of abscess and my face is telling me that unless I want to look like a person who has one side of their face bigger than the other, I'd better get my arse to the dentist and pronto. I'm not looking forward to this visit, and am guilty of being one of those people who leaves the dentist for the last minute. I think this is the year that all of that is going to change. Yes. It is time to turn over a new dental leaf. ;-)
Anyhoo, that's the news for this a.m. Thanks again and hopefully I'll return later!

Birthdaze
It's that time again. Today is Marcus' birthday (happy birthday, you old man you) - Wednesday is mine (*yawn*) and Friday is Kat's birthday. And there ya have it. I've already received an early birthday present from a friend -- a book titled "Pennsylvania Wildlife Tails: a Game Warden's Notebook which is a surprisingly witty collection of stories and cartoon illustrations.

Checking In, Checking Up
My U.S. Navy connection and former teenage boyfriend Captain Doctor Henry checked in/checked up on me recently. He told me he's been keeping tabs on me and reading my blog and I gently scolded him for not leaving a comment 'round these parts. He's promised me he will next time he visits. In the meantime he's been busy travelling doing speaking engagements and other Navy-related work. Doc is one of those friends of mine whose middle name is "overachiever." ;-)

Loafing
Ted @ Rocket Jones took me up on my suggestion that he have a contest on his blog, a loaf of his homemade bread as the prize. I never thought my suggestion would result in me being named the winner! Coolness, I can't wait to receive my prize!!! Thanks Ted!

Shakin' my booty
I've been shakin' my booty ever since I heard a bit of Who Let the Dogs Out on the radio. Ladies and gents, that sums up this morning's brain spasm. :-)

Flake Me, Baby
The snow I mentioned in the previous post is here at my current location -- in Pennsylvania. I was long overdue for a few days in this neck o' the woods! Even though the weather forecast had been for rain, I needed to get out of dodge and... (drum roll please,) DUST MY BRAIN. :-)
Other than the usual routine when I'm here, (feeding the deer, getting more wood for the fireplace, reading, hiking in the woods, etc.) the snowfall gave me the opportunity to test my digital camera in wind-blown and somewhat whiteout conditions. I attempted some photos last night, and the result was nothing more than sharp backgrounds and big white dots (duh. It was still snowing when I did this.) Why should I be surprised by the result? After all, I'm a flake and of course my flakiness would show up as big flakes in my photos. (I'm laughing right now.) I digress.
We now return you to your regularly scheduled diatribe. (wink)
It goes without saying that the laptop travels with me, unless I'm so sick of it that I opt to leave it home. Not this time. Hanging out around these parts means dialup. Yippee! NOT. So there I was... sitting quietly at the laptop, tapping on the keys and waxing poetically about some sort of nonsense when there was a bit of a power surge. You know what happens with power surges and computers, right? Without a surge protector in sight, I'd say that my reaction time was stellar... the minute the lights flickered and the television went *poof* was more than enough prompting for me to unplug the laptop. Phew! Of course being the flake that I pride myself in being, perhaps I overreacted. Maybe nothing would have happened to the laptop after all. Then again... history has it that just a sip of tea will wreak havoc on any computer within my reach. Better safe than sorry, I suppose.
And that's about all the flake you're gonna get out of me for the moment. I'm waiting for the sunrise, as I plan to extend my flakiness by taking early morning photographs. If any turn out decently I'll return here and post them.

Spring's Lamb is a Buffalo
It's been said that the month of March is "in like a lion and out like a lamb." However, it is obvious that March is NOT departing like a lamb here in the northeast. It's more like a buffalo... or something. :-)

Browsers - Part II
In my last entry I asked you which browser you used. I was curious, simply because I think it's so important for folks to stop using Internet Explorer. In the April issue of Popular Science, (in an article about Spam and Punishment,) Pop Sci columnist Cory Doctorow writes:
... the best thing you can do to protect yourself from this scourge is to just get away from Microsoft products. The safest route is to switch to a Mac or GNU/Linux OS, but if that's too drastic, at least stop using Outlook and Explorer with Windows. Instead try Thunderbird and Firefox, an e-mail client and browser from the nonprofit Mozilla Foundation, which exists solely to oversee the production and distribution of these free and rock-solid programs. Both are safe against virtually all cyber attacks, are updated almost immediately when new threats are discovered, and are available for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X.
I should have been more specific with my inquiry and asked about your operating system also. Point is, I know a few people who still use Internet Explorer and highly recommend that they ditch it in favor of Firefox. (And yes Al, I'll go take a look at the logs and report my findings back here.)
Update
As promised, I reviewed the log files and here are my findings -- the majority of those who visit here use Mozilla, followed by Internet Explorer, Netscape and Safari. 84 percent of you use Windows, 12 percent MacOS and 4 percent Linux.

Congratulations, Zoe!!
The divine Ms. Zoe of My Boyfriend is a Twat has won Best European blog in the Fifth Annual Weblog Awards. She wins 20.05 Euro, a shipment of gourmet coffee, and an invitation for sightseeing in Dresden. Hey, I can extend an invitation for sightseeing in New York, but you'd have to pay to get here. (yuk yuk yuk.) Congratulations Petunia! Don't forget to thank the little people. ;-)

Hello? Anybody Home?
Without looking I reached out to grab my cell phone to make a call and began pressing keys. Suddenly I'm hearing music. Duh! I grabbed the iPod instead of the phone. That's as bad as grabbing the landline to change the channel on the television (I've done that too.)
Obviously the elevator doesn't quite reach the top today. :-)

Evidently I'm a P.I.T.A.
You know you're in trouble when your mother phones and says, "Yes, I'd like to speak to ...P.A." My response: "Huh? What? Did you say P.A.?" She replied, "Yes, YOU. P.I.T.A. I saw your phone number on Caller I.D. You're a pain in the ass!" This coming from my mother, who is the first person to complain when she doesn't hear from you. Uh huh.
Okay, so I've gone a bit overboard with my phone calls to check up on her. She had the second part of her eye surgery last Friday and this time around, her left eye wasn't as cooperative as the right eye had been. One family member remarked that she didn't look good and that she's sporting some unsightly bruising. I'll see her tomorrow but in the meantime, I'm just doing my job. Yup, checking up on you mom. Get over it. :-)

Proposed New Slogan for New York
The Bloomberg administration has proposed "The World's Second Home" as a phrase they'd like to trademark as New York's official slogan. The New York Times invited readers to suggest alternatives, and some suggestions were included in this past Sunday's City section of the newspaper. My favorite: "Come. Don't Come. Whatever."

Year #4 Down the Tubes
I said I wasn't going to try again yet couldn't help myself. After four unsuccessful attempts, now I REALLY give up.
Unfortunately we were unable to comply with your order for the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concert.
Orders for tickets far exceeded the number of tickets available. Therefore, their allocation was decided by electronically drawing lots and your application unfortunately was not selected.
Yours faithfully, The Vienna Philharmonic
Faithfully, my ass.
