Zippity Doo-Dah, NOT!

Dialup sucks.

Hanging out in the woods means forgetting about high-speed access and broadband. It means molasses-speed access and narrowband... it means I could age 20 years before those darn-tootin' files transfer or download. The experience reminds me of the days when I longed for my own T1... I'd spend all day at the office with high-speed access then return home to dialup. It sucks. Until I return to my homestead, the need for speed will have to wait.

End of bitching. :-)

Blogger Boobie-Thon

Bloggers Robyn and Lisa have teamed up to raise money for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation via the third annual Blogger Boobie-Thon, scheduled for October 1-10. (Additional information can be found here.)

We're coming up fast on Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October) and for the third year in a row we're going to try to raise a bucketload of money for the Komen Foundation. That's right, The BoobieThon is getting in gear for another year. This year the event will be entirely focused on raising money for Komen and there have been a few necessary changes. Robyn has a greater workload personally since this event's early beginnings, and she just isn't able to keep up all alone. I offered to help, and I was thrilled that she accepted my offer. I am SO incredibly proud to be associated with such a wonderful event to raise not only awareness but funds for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation for the third year in a row.

As in years past, you can submit your rack shots for posting on the BoobieThon website. (Pictures may also be sent to boobiethon@tampatantrum.com if you encounter problems with the main email address.) As was the case last year, both gals and guys are welcome to send in their pictures, but only appropriately covered boobies will appear on the main page. More information will be coming on that soon. The website will be unveiled on October 1, and the BoobieThon is slated to run through October 10, so send us your pics soon!

Above all, this should be fun and profitable, because it's for a very good cause. It's all about boobie health, folks. We've all got 'em, so let's take good care of them. Remember your self-exam, see your doctor regularly, and let's help save the boobies!

Daily Source Code and iPodder

I haven't had the opportunity until now to go into greater detail about the Daily Source Code (an audio blog post produced daily) and iPodder, a small program that lets you download audio files -- usually mp3's direct to your mp3 device.

The Daily Source Code

The Daily Source Code is an audio blog post produced and presented on a daily basis by Adam Curry in MP3 format. Each audio post is a cornucopia of whatever Adam decides to discuss that particular day. Recent audio musings included his horticultural pursuits, an attempt for listeners to hear birds chirping outside while he was recording, and a clip of his wife Patricia singing at a fashion show.

However, DSC is far from Adam just talking about his dogs or the swans in his pond. What makes this a great listen (outside of the technology itself) is that he touches upon a number of topics in one post, and if you don't feel like hearing about his latest audiobook find, his 'song of the day' or any other part, you simply move past it and onto something else in his program. For those into technology and development, a good percentage of his daily post focuses on it. If you're a geek wannabe and don't know your ass from your elbow when it comes to things tech-related, Adam explains tech in simple terms. [more in extended entry.]

Outside of that, it doesn't hurt that Adam's background includes years in radio; he knows firsthand what works and what doesn't in order to produce an informative yet entertaining audio program. His voice is clear and engaging, and when he talks about technology his enthusiasm is evident, especially when the topic is his latest widget, iPodder (see below for more info.)

Here's an example of the content from the September 16 Daily Source Code. The DSC site currently displays audio posts listed by date, the file size and the time/length of the post. A text list of the content per post would be a terrific addition and could be helpful for those on dial-up. Something like this might work well:

Thursday, September 16 (26 mb; 38 minutes)

The idea here is that if you've downloaded a DSC and you're listening to it in your car or you're riding the subway, and you hear something you want to go back to later on, sifting through each DSC mp3 to find an item you know you heard there isn't ideal. A content list in bullet-point form would serve as a terrific addition and could be included alongside the entries that appear on the DSC site.

Another thing I want to mention: for those who don't own an external mp3 player, you don't need one to listen to the Source Code. You can listen via your laptop or desktop, and all the Source Codes produced to date are readily available for your listening pleasure on the site. (Geez, that sounded like a commercial, didn't it.)

There's always something new to learn at The Daily Source Code; it's worth listening to and it ain't boring. :-)

iPodder

Though still in development, iPodder is small program Adam created that runs on your computer. It's only purpose is to download audio files, usually mp3's directly to your mp3 device. You run it, it checks for new stuff and loads it into your iPod or other mp3 player, and all you have to do is choose what new items you want to listen to. Any device that can exchange files with WMP will work with iPodder.

URL: http://www.ipodder.org

ipodder development group

In addition, Adam has set up a separate group for anyone who wants to contribute their talents toward the ongoing development of iPodder. Should you want to deposit your two cents' worth, (both Mac and Windows-based geek gods,) you might want to check out the group or simply read through the threads.

First Day of Autumn

Evidently summer is over as of today and it's officially the first day of Autumn.

image

Not in my book it isn't. Past experience has shown that summer never really exits until the first snow falls. Summer temperatures have shown up in October and November 'round these parts, so putting away all the summer clothes -- t-shirts, shorts, sun dresses, flip-flops, sandals, bathing suits, etc. won't be done anytime soon. I always keep the summer apparel ready, just in case there's a hike in temperature or if I'm travelling to a warmer climate. (Either that or I'm simply avoiding the inevitable dreariness of clouds and minimal sunshine.)

Whatever Plates

I was digging around in my files and this popped up. It's the collection of miniature license plates I have on my keychain. Note that while in Detroit, Michigan and Idaho Springs, Colorado I tried to find plates with whatever on them but failed miserably. Obviously that didn't stop me from purchasing plates from those two places.

image

I wonder if these are available in other countries... (insert thought bubble here... the UK? Belgium? etc.?)

Preserving Photos for Millennia

From the October 2004 FYI/Digital Archives section of Popular Science:

Question: Is it true that CDs can disintegrate after 20 years? How long will my digital photos last?

Answer: Yes, CDs sometimes disintegrate within a decade or two, but with proper handling and use of the higher-quality discs, your digital photo album should last a century. The breakdown of discs, known as CD rot, begins with poor care. You can avoid it by using CDs coated with gold rather than the more common silver. Gold doesn't oxidize, which makes these discs more durable. If you want to save your photos for, say, a millennium, your options start to thin., While they won't be able to store your digital photographs, HD (high-density) Rosetta nickel chips can fit 196,000 pages' worth of physical images or text onto their two-inch-square surface -- each page reduced to a micron in width -- and researchers at Los Alamos National Laboratory have estimated that the chips should last at least 1,000 years.

Using HD Rosetta chips, a company called Team Encounter is offering customers the opportunity to send a photo of their choice, along with a short message, into space onboard a solar sail spacecraft - for one low price of $25!

Tropical Cyclone Names

Since 1953, Atlantic tropical storms have been named from lists originated by the National Hurricane Center and now maintained and updated by an international committee of the World Meteorological Organization. The lists featured only women's names until 1979, when men's and women's names were alternated. Six lists are used in rotation. Thus, the 2004 list will be used again in 2010. worldwide tropical cyclone Atlantic names. (From the Tropical Prediction Center/National Hurricane Center web site.)

For my Upstate Pal

I came across this tune from 1971 while searching for songs to add to my iPod. So here ya go, here's your Monday morning tune. :-)

Saturday night I was downtown
Working for the FBI
Sitting in a nest of bad men
Whisky bottles piling high

Bootlegging boozer on the west side
Full of people who are doing wrong
Just about to call up the DA man
When I heard this woman singing a song

A pair of 45's made me open my eyes
My temperature started to rise
She was a long cool woman in a black dress
Just a 5'9, beautiful tall
With just one look I was a bad mess
'Cos that long cool woman had it all

I saw her headin' to the table
Well a tall walking big black cat
When Charlie said I hope that you're able boy
Well I'm telling you she knows where it's at

Well suddenly we heard the sirens
And everybody started to run
A jumping out of doors and tables
Well I heard somebody shooting a gun

Well the DA was pumping my left hand
And then she was a-holding my right
Well I told her don't get scared
'Cos you're gonna be spared
Well I've gotta be forgiven
If I wanna spend my living
With a long cool woman in a black dress
Just a 5'9 beautiful tall
Well, with just one look I was a bad mess
'Cos that long cool woman had it all
Had it all

Long Cool Woman (in a Black Dress)

Friends

What greater love can one have for another than to wrap him in a massive bear hug, ruffle his hair (because you know that it really irritates him) and tell him that you love him. Because he's your friend, because he annoys the hell out of you, because he's seen you up and he's seen you down, been there for the trauma, the terror and the elation. Because you know that you will know each other forever, even if you don't speak for a year or live in separate continents, you know that your friends are the people who will count.

Embracing friendship is easier for some than for others. The constituents of friendship are too many and varied to be defined easily, but everyone instinctively understands them. Whereas some people make friends immediately with those they have just met, others take more time to pronounce their judgement on acquaintances or those whom they have recently met. Is the depth or breadth of the eventual friendships different? Does it matter? Everyone understands that some of the friendships we form are natural and almost unconscious choices. The phrase "I can't imagine us not being friends" is so common as to be ubiquitous.

Of course, the embracing of friends, of taking them to your heart and into rooms of your psyche where others are forbidden to go, can be dangerous. It requires a faith and trust in them which can be hard to give. However open or private a person may be, there is a step to be taken which involves the disclosure of things which you may not want to disclose. While no-one is an open book, there are still pieces of life which everyone keeps to themself, either embarrassed or ashamed by their deeds, choices and thoughts.

Those grubby, imperfect jewels are kept tight in a locked box within us, where we are unwilling to put them on display. Which is precisely why we are afraid and disappointed by the betrayal of friends; "I allowed you in, only you, to hold you close, and yet you remained unmoved by this rare privilege, this denuding, and turned to expose me." Just as you can be betrayed by a kiss, you can be betrayed by a hug.

'Slutwear' is so Last Year

Demure designs have replaced scanty navel-baring looks on the catwalks of this week's semi-annual run of fashion shows, a reliable sign of what shoppers can expect to find in stores next spring. "The slut is out now. She's dead," said Godfrey Deeny, senior fashion critic at Fashion Wire Daily. Trend forecaster Merrill Greene called the new look "prim and improper." "It's the new modesty," she said. "It's what's under the clothes, something seething underneath. We won't be showing it so much on the surface."Reuters

Dog Drives Off...

... While Owner Watches Hockey

WHITEHORSE, Yukon Territory - An exuberant dog left in a truck while the owner watched Canada win the World Cup of Hockey managed to throw the vehicle into gear and coast down a city hill.

A man out for a walk called police after seeing the vehicle coast by with a black Labrador retriever behind the wheel. Police arrived to find the truck in the middle of a road, blocking traffic, with the dog still at the wheel. No one was injured and there was no damage. Going door to door, police managed to track down the owner.

"Subsequent investigation indicates that the dog was celebrating the Canadian victory in the world hockey game and knocked the truck into gear, causing it to roll down the hill," Whitehorse Royal Canadian Mounted Police said Wednesday in a firmly tongue-in-cheek news release. "No word yet on how the dog is doing studying the rules for negotiating the new traffic circle." (AP)

This is an Outrage

Contractor's Bag Full of Explosives at JFK

Shaun Marshall, a medic for defense contractor DynCorp, arrived at Kennedy Airport (NY) August 19 from the United Arab Emirates. He was trying to board a United Airlines flight home to California when he was pulled aside for a routine security check. A search of his bags by federal screeners found what police bomb technicians described in an FBI complaint as a Soviet "projectile point detonating fuse'' and a "surface-to-air and air-to-air cartridge.'' Marshall also had five .50-caliber bullets and four small arms cartridges, which he did not declare to United as required by law, according to the complaint made public Tuesday.

Marshall, 26, told officers he was importing the munitions, which he believed to be inert, for use in DynCorp training exercises, and Port Authority police released him, federal officials said. The FBI sent agents to arrest Marshall at his Riverside, California home after the bomb squad analyzed the munitions and DynCorp officials said Marshall had no involvement in its training operations. DynCorp employees were warned not to bring dangerous materials back to the United States, company spokesman Mike Dickerson said. Marshall was released on bail in California and was expected to fly to New York City to be arraigned in federal court Friday. He faces charges of placing explosives on an aircraft and trying to place ammunition on a domestic flight without notifying the carrier. He could face 20 years in prison if convicted. - CNN

Port Authority police released him - how stupid is that? WHY would a medic be carrying explosives? Where did he get them in the first place? What were they, souvenirs? IF convicted? The guy should be thrown in jail for life, not only for the charges he faces but also for his absolute stupidity and endangering the lives of others.

Hot and Steamy

Drip, Drip, Drip

The nose is running, the perspiration is guaranteed to seep out in buckets and the clothing will be wet. The temperature here in NYC is 73 degrees right now, the high today will be 81. Humidity is at 100 percent, it's been raining on and off and a steady stream of building soot has been slithering down. The pollen count is very high.

This combo-platter of rain, humidity and high pollen count spells discomfort with a capital "D" -- it's guaranteed to make your clothing stick to your body in ways you couldn't even imagine. If you suffer from seasonal allergies, bingo! Multiply that feeling by a thousand and that's what it feels like in the subway station (nevermind the odor, which I'll leave up to your imagination.)

It's a great day to remain indoors and in a refreshingly chilled air conditioned room. Otherwise, oh joy, oh discomfort, oh... sheesh.

Internet Phone Users

Britain Creates New Phone Numbers

A new batch of phone numbers will be assigned in Britain to accommodate the emerging market for cheap phone calls over the Internet, the UK's media and telecoms regulator said on Monday. The voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) phone services are getting a boost in the United States, Europe and parts of Asia from broadband Internet access plans that allow users to make cheap, and even free, phone calls for a monthly subscription.

On Monday UK telecoms industry regulator Ofcom said it would establish the prefix "056," allowing Britons to switch from their existing 11-digit telephone number to a new Internet broadband 11-digit phone number. Customers would also be able to take a new 11-digit number beginning with the more recognizable regional prefixes "01" or "02," Ofcom said. Finally, select customers may be able to keep their existing 11-digit number after switching. Ofcom said it would leave number assignment to the Internet telephone providers, and that it would keep regulation of the emerging industry to a minimum to spur competition.

Such services are viewed as a threat to Europe's fixed-line phone companies such as BT Group and the Netherlands' KPN who have experienced a rash of customer defections to cut-price competitors offering cheap Internet phone services. BT has established its own Internet phone service, in part to fend off upstarts such as Skype. The Luxembourg-based software company offers a free computer program that enables users to make free voice calls over the Internet to other Skype users behind PCs anywhere in the world. Skype customers are charged for calls made to non-Skype users. - Reuters

Double Duty

The latest addition to my a.m. routine is the early-morning 5-mile power walk on the loop (taking the shortcut at 102nd Street) in Central Park. On Saturday I added the reservoir (1.58 mile) making the walk a good two hours' worth. Yesterday it was once around the reservoir and that was it for the day. I brought the camera along in my backpack, and managed to snap a few photos on the way. Here's a favorite, a partial view looking out over the reservoir:

Clinton Surgery

Update: CNN

According to a statement from his office, "former President Bill Clinton is being admitted into New York Presbyterian Hospital today and is scheduled to have bypass surgery." ABC and CBS television reported that Clinton, 58, had checked into the hospital for quadruple heart bypass surgery. A Democratic Party official told Reuters that Clinton, who served two terms as president from 1993 to 2001, had gone to the hospital complaining of chest pains. The severity of Clinton's coronary problem was discovered after tests at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, New York, ABC News reported. His coronary results were not favorable and he was found to have multiple lesions, it said. CBS News said doctors found a blockage. CNN quoted a source close to the former president as saying the surgery could take place as early as Saturday. - Reuters

Panda Sex Videos Successful

5-year-old panda Hua Mei gave birth to twins on Wednesday less than a year after she was sent into a Chinese breeding program. She returned to China under a loan agreement that requires that the offspring of Chinese pandas be sent there after their third birthday.

Chinese veterinarians, concerned that Hua Mei had little knowledge of sex after living only in captivity, showed her videos of mating pandas to prepare her for a series of "blind dates." That education appears to have paid off. She mated naturally in April with the male panda Ling Ling and was artificially inseminated with sperm from Shaun Shaun. Testing will be done to determine the cubs' father. - CNN

New Class of Extrasolar Planets

Astronomers announced the first discovery of a new class of planets beyond our solar system about 10 to 20 times the size of Earth - far smaller than any previously detected. The planets make up a new class of Neptune-sized extrasolar planets.

"These Neptune-sized planets prove that Jupiter-sized, gas giants aren't the only planets out there," Dr. Geoffrey Marcy, one of the planet co-discoverers, said. His partner, Dr. Paul Butler, added, "We are beginning to see smaller and smaller planets. Earth-like planets are the next destination." In addition, one of the new planets joins three others around the nearby star 55 Cancri to form the first known four-planet system.

The discoveries consist of two new planets. They were discovered by the world renowned planet-hunting team of Butler and Marcy of the Carnegie Institute of Washington and University of California, Berkeley, respectively; and Barbara McArthur of the University of Texas, Austin. Both findings were peer- reviewed and accepted for future publication in the Astrophysical Journal. NASA and the National Science Foundation funded the research.
