In some cases I'd believe the 'too old' thing - but the flip side is what they're REALLY looking for: right-of-school, young and INEXPENSIVE (aka cheap hire.)

Nah, it's just a friendly way of them saying that they believe you'll resist unlearning all your bad habits before you can assimilate into their new corporate doctrine :)
