Diving In
I've got a new toy that's been surgically attached to my hands. The Nikon D50 has turned me into a photographing fool.
I'm not going to bore you with the difference between the Nikon and the camera I was using, a Sony DSC-S85. Let's just say that I've been having a grand old time with the Nikon. The Sony still has its features, like the ability to record a few minutes of video... but given the choice between the two cameras, I'll happily take the Nikon. And if it's not been all that evident, I've moved from photographing deer to snapping shots of birds. For me, all it takes is bird feed and some self-imposed patience. Catching a crystal-clear photograph of a bird in flight is a new goal I've yet to manage, but I know I'll reach it one of these days.
In the meantime, here's a photograph I took that left me laughing each time I saw it. I put a plastic plate full of bird seed outside and waited. Once the birds discovered yet another food source, they'd dive right in. Granted, the photo is blurry, but it DOES amuse me.
I think I'm becoming wackier as time goes by.

ah, I thought the pictures were getting closer and clearer which lens/settings were you using for the bird (and I assume the squirrel) .. I had to buy the Nikon D70 kit (+ 70-300G zoom) in August because I couldn't get any decent motocycle pictures at the races in July .. just wait till next year's race (laguna seca !!),
birds in flight not so hard if you pan (depending on the lens), but you should hang a hummingbird feeder if you want a real challenge...
Unfortunately instead of drooling over concert tix I'm resisting the new 18-200VR lens ... good thing photography isn't really a nerdy thing eh?

Steve - the camera was a xmas present, along with a 70-300mm zoom lens (yippee!) I used the zoom for the photo, and though I set the camera to auto, the settings recorded at an exposure of 1/500 sec, f-stop 5.0.
When I learn the manual settings, perhaps the photos will be much better than right now. :-)
BTW, we are nerds, aren't we. We get excited over new hardware ALL THE TIME, whether it's computers or cameras. hehehehe.
MT - yes I snort snowflakes on a regular basis. :P

It's a good photo. All of your photos are good. That's something I truly stink at - I just have no eye for it.
I know it's the wrong time of year but if you could put hummingbirds on your list of furture potential targets I'd love it. They're really hard to catch but they're so pretty.
