The Things You Learn

My web statistics have reflected a number of Google searches on the word "dusting." For the life of me, I couldn't figure out if these people were searching for information about actual dusting -- that is, using a feather duster or rag to wipe dust off your counters, etc. -- or looking for something else entirely (crop dusting?) Anyway, one day and numerous hits to my blog later, I decided to review the Google searches to see what came up. Wasn't I surprised when I found that "dusting" has yet another definition. Read on:

A common cleaning product has become the inhalant of choice for a growing number of teens. Teens once inhaled nitrous oxide from cans of whipped cream, but now many are inhaling compressed air from cans of computer dusting products and the results can be deadly. The practice is called "dusting." - The KCRA Channel

I had no idea this was going on.

Yeah, we called it huffing. I did it once at the urging of a particularly stupid boy at a restaurant where I worked. AN old whipped cream can. It was the most frightening thing ever, it actually kills the oxygen to your brain. I felt my head go cold and time seemed to stretch seconds into days. I can never understand how anyone would seek that feeling.

I've heard of huffing, but not dusting. Sometimes being out of the loop ain't such a bad thing.

Another trend among the junior high age group is playing a pass-out 'game.' One person chokes another until they almost pass out, then lets go. The choke-ee gets a big rush. This was around when I was a kid too, but it wasn't very popular.

I saw this on a TV show recently. A 13 year old girl accidentally hung herself with a belt when she was playing the 'one player version' of the game. What a total waste. Some of her friends that were interviewed didn't even realize you could die by strangulation from this game.

This goes under the 'and yet one more thing to worry about' category.

Well, crap. When I hit post the first time it said Done but nothing happened so I hit it again. Please fixie my bad.

I've had some pretty disturbing search phrases lately - sicko stuff involving kids. I don't get it.

i might have thought dusting as being related to angel dust. i was dusted once in this manner when i was 15. horrible experience.

the whole pass out thing was around back then too, only kids did it by pressing on their temples real hard. well, i only knew one kid who did it and beans don't really count as brains do they?

i huffed rubber cement once and thought my head was going to explode. i seriously thought i was gonna die. i never did it again. i was in the 8th grade.

i also tried huffing in high school but it just didn't work. nobody told me it was dangerous. nothing happened though. i think we were huffing the wrong thing, it was foot powder in a can or something.

this is prolly way more than you ever wanted to know about me considering this is my first ever visit to your site.

now you're prolly hoping it's my last.

ha.

Kids get creative when the good drugs are kept out of their reach. These problems wouldn't be nearly as ubiquitous if school lunches were served with Gin.

That's just stupid... you have any idea what a can of that stuff costs (I don't, I've never cleaned my computer except to blow the ashes off the keyboard)?

Back in my day we just headed down to the Mobil and picked up a gallon or two of that leaded goodness. The best part is, when your buddies brain pops, it's really easy to get rid of the body with the leftover gas.

Paint is no good, it's hard to hide the evidence: http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/0721051gold1.html

I think we used to call it sniffing, and the usual suspects were gasoline, model glue and the like. Different air passage but the same long-term consequences. Deterioration of the brain or death. Not very logical after all.

The choke-ee game is very scary, especially having kids of my own. First, how ignorant can a kid be that doesn't realize they could kill themselves doing this. Oh, how easy it is for forget, kids and their belief in their own immortality.

Even Tippex, if that's what you call that white stuff people use as "corrector fluid".
Dunno what's in it but I wouldn't dust my brain with vapours like that, makes you feel very odd if you do. And not high anywhere.
I wonder what virtual Tippex is?
That passing-out "game" I'm afraid we did do as kids. You hug one from behind very tight, no strangulation involved, and they end up on the floor.
It didn't feel harmful, you usually wound up laughing with the others once you remembered where you were ... but just look at me now; or maybe not.
