Virginia's Homespun Bullshittery
I finally managed to catch up with Kat yesterday and we spent a lengthy amount of time chatting away by phone. Now before you folks who live in Virginia jump all over me, the title is a direct quote from her -- an expression of the goings-on since moving from Houston to Virginia. In discussing her new life there and her interaction with the folks at the local phone company, she labelled it homespun bullshittery.
Seems her new locale in a lovely but extremely rural part of Virginia has left her tapping her ladylike feet, impatiently awaiting the long-ago promised but yet to be delivered broadband access. The local telephone company's response was nothing more than "well m'am, your name's on the list and they'll get to you when they get to you" or some such nonsense like that. Nevermind the fact that the phone company is RIGHT DOWN THE STREET from where she lives.
Other than this minor (though sometimes major) inconvenience, Kat is busy settling in and making the best of it. Before I forget, I promised I'd mention that she'll be in attendance at the Lake Country MusicFest in South Hill, Virginia on August 13. If you plan to attend the musicfest, do go over to Kat's blog and leave her a comment (she uses dialup to check email but says that it takes just about forever) that you're going. She's all for meeting new folks and hey, I think I know some folks who live in Virginia, though they're not necessarily within close proximity to her. (Hey, I do what I can for friends, ya know?)
So... that's the news from a rural part of Virginia. Kat plans to be back online blogging as soon as she has broadband access, whenever that happens. This concludes today's PSA. :-)

I was stuck with dial-up until about 4 months ago. There were only two options in my neck of the woods, which are, by the way, wooded (the road is paved). One of the two options involved a cable modem from a company that I deserted as a cable provider because they were atrocious. The other was Direcway, satellite. We are overjoyed with DirecTV and Tivo, great company, has delivered on every aspect of the service we purchase from them... they work with Direcway, so we saved our pennies and signed up... it has been a nightmare, horrible service, horrible company, a whole lot of bait and switch... and bottom line, aside from the specific act of "downloading" the connection is only vaguely faster than a good dial-up and things like ftp uploads (despite the fact that Direcway is two way satellite access) are actually slower than dial-up.
Until we signed up for Direcway, Khrystyna and I were sharing a single dial-up account via an Apple Airport Extreme base station... so, I just wanted to say that I understand Kat's pain. ;-)
We looked at the map today, South Hill, Virginia is about 3.5 hours south of us northern-virginy-monkeys.

As you know, we experienced a month of hell at the hands of the 'phone company just recently.
We really, REALLY, feel for anyone in this situation right now.

They installed my DSL today and will wonders never cease? It's as fast as my DSL back in Houston was, so yay! Boy, have I ever got some catching up to do.
3.5 hours isn't close, but it isn't horribly far, so hiya, Blue.
Thanks for the PSA, Cindy. I do appreciate it and I'm so glad to be back online.

Kat - bet you didn't realize I had that much power, did ya? ;-)
Good to know you're back on and 'round these parts!
Mr. Tan - well, well, well, look who surfaced. I've already fixed your spelling errors. :-)
P&T - now we don't have to feel bad for her anymore.
Blue - well, it could be a good road trip!

This monkey is about 2 hours east of South Hill ... 1 hour if I drive the HEMI. *snark*

Actually, I think the label is quite fitting of the Commonwealth. This little monkey is in the Edinburg area....central Shenandoah Valley Simian tribe! Welcome!
