100th Birthday of the Banana Split
I love banana splits but haven't had one in a long, long time. Recently I've had a mega craving for one but have managed to sidestep it and forget about it. Then I read that today is the 100th birthday. Dang! Now I'm tempted to go buy the fixings and have myself one for dinner... ;-)
The traditional banana split: An oblong glass dish holds a banana sliced lengthwise. The banana cradles a generous scoop of chocolate ice cream, a scoop of strawberry and a scoop of vanilla. Chocolate syrup (or fudge topping) is poured over the chocolate ice cream, strawberries over the strawberry ice cream and crushed pineapple over the vanilla. Then comes the whipped cream. Next, a bright red maraschino cherry is dropped on each scoop. Chopped nuts are optional, but the best ones would have pecans. - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
