Funky DNS?

For the past week now I've been unable to access my site in the evenings (hmm... dinner break for the blog?) The blog address is set in MT as www.squipper.com/weblog, and when trying to access that, it returns a 'server not found' error. If I type that same address without the 'www' in the address, it gives me a page of my text, flush left, and no graphics. I've no idea what's up with that, but am wondering if it's the DNS and how I have my MovableType config set up. Isn't there a way where the blog can be accessed, in its entirety, with either address? Perhaps my config isn't set up properly? Any thoughts?

Cindy

I just tried: www.squipper.com/weblog (OK), squipper.com/weblog (OK), www.squipper.com (Permission denied) and squipper.com (Permission denied and file not found).

Looks correct to me. You may want to completely flush your browser cache and try again. The 'all left hand side' can be because of a corrupt stylesheet.

Okay. Good news and bad news.

The good news (you want that first, I know this because your a girl) is that the DNS is fine. I've looked at your weblog from a variety of locations and it always works. Both squipper.com/weblog and www.squipper.com/weblog resolve just fine.

If your not seeing the images and CSS at squippper.com/weblog (no www) it's a local issue and likely related to a bad cached file. Clear your browser caches, delete them manually, and try again.

If that doesn't do it, get with me via email and we fix. BTW, you should also have an index.html and/or an .htaccess redirect in the root (squipper.com).

Bad news: Your host sucks. Terrible ping times and not particulary secure -- details available via email.

Oz - thanks for checking. The thing is, I never know *when* it will happen. Sometimes it's in the morning, sometimes in the evening. It's really wacky.

Al (and Oz) -
you're right about flushing the cache, which I have done each time I've had this problem. It's like flushing a backed up toilet - it never works and then I give up and wait until hours later before trying again.

I know the host sucks. I did a test on the DNS last night and it came back with a number of warnings/failures. Was a cool test to do - too bad I didn't understand most of it. Because the hosting co. is so cheap, that's why I use it (cheap, yeah, that's me.) If there's a better alternative I'm all for it. I'll email you.

Meanwhile Al, as for the good news/bad news thing: you really don't know me at all! I prefer the bad news FIRST.

If you get stuck you can shift your blog over here but (1) it's via dynamic DNS so you get outages, (2) the bandwidth is only so-so and (3) the admin is a sadistic bastard. On the positive side, it is free.

There must be some alternate hosting services (make sure they have mysql/php for your other stuff.

I forgot - I'm the admin.
